Fasting in the UK is a unique experience. Because the Islamic calendar moves back about 11 days each year, Ramadan cycles through the British seasons — and the difference between a December fast (around 10 hours) and a June fast (nearly 19 hours) is enormous. Here's how to make whichever Ramadan you get work for you.
Get suhoor right
Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) is a sunnah and a lifeline. Prioritise slow-release energy: oats, eggs, wholegrain bread, yoghurt, dates and plenty of water. Avoid salty food that will leave you thirsty by mid-morning. Even when Fajr is brutally early, waking for a glass of water and a few dates is far better than skipping suhoor entirely.
Managing work and school
- Tell your employer or teachers you're fasting — most UK workplaces are supportive and many offer flexible hours during Ramadan.
- Schedule demanding meetings and revision for the morning, when energy is highest.
- Use your lunch break for a walk, a nap or Qur'an instead of the canteen.
- If you work shifts or drive for a living, plan iftar logistics in advance — dates and water in the car or locker.
Iftar without the food coma
Break your fast with dates and water, pray Maghrib, then eat a balanced meal. The fried-everything iftar is a beloved tradition, but pacing yourself means you'll actually manage taraweeh prayers afterwards. Hydrate steadily between iftar and bedtime rather than in one go.
Who is exempt from fasting?
Islam is practical: the ill, travellers, pregnant and nursing women who fear harm, the elderly and children are not required to fast. Missed fasts are made up later, or compensated through fidyah where fasting is not possible at all. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, speak to your GP — many surgeries in Muslim areas offer Ramadan-specific advice.
Make it count
Ramadan is more than hunger management — it's the month the Qur'an was revealed. Set realistic spiritual goals: a portion of Qur'an daily, taraweeh at your local mosque, regular sadaqah, and guarding your tongue. Check our Ramadan timetable for exact suhoor and iftar times in your city.
