How to find the qibla accurately
The bearing shown is calculated using the great-circle route from your coordinates to the Ka'bah (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E). To use it: open your phone's compass app, face true north, then rotate clockwise by the number of degrees shown. Keep your phone away from metal objects and speakers, which distort the magnetometer, and calibrate the compass (figure-of-eight motion) if readings look unstable.
A reliable low-tech check: at solar noon in Makkah (when the sun passes directly overhead the Ka'bah, around late May and mid-July each year), simply facing the sun from the UK gives you the qibla exactly.
