Calculating dates…

Dates use the Umm al-Qura calendar and are estimates β€” observance in the UK is confirmed by local moonsighting announcements and may differ by a day.

How the Islamic calendar works

The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months, each lasting 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the new crescent moon. A lunar year is around 354 days β€” 11 days shorter than the solar year β€” which is why Ramadan drifts through the seasons, taking roughly 33 years to complete a full cycle. Year 1 corresponds to 622 CE, the year of the Prophet's ο·Ί migration (hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah.
